Sometimes those situations bear fruit, but too often, when a company attempts to emulate another company, the results are disastrous.ย Cultures just donโ€™t easily translate.

Four key elements should guide senior leaders as they invest in organizational culture change:

1.ย ย ย ย ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—–๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ.ย Identify both the best elements of your company culture to keep and understand what aspects are holding you back.
2.ย ย ย ย ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐——๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—น๐˜.ย With an understanding of your current state, articulate the end state.ย This will shape the scope and scale of the culture change needed.
3.ย ย ย ย ๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—–๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ.ย Your transformation roadmap will define the timeframe and required rate of change as well as the sequence of how to bring about the change.ย It answers what functions or departments might take a leading role as well as the order of organizational behavior changes you need to tackle.
4.ย ย ย ย ๐—™๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒยญยญ ๐—ฅ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐˜€.ย From our experience, employees fall into one of three camps during a change effort.ย Roughly a third will be energized by the change and be your biggest champions.ย Find them and harness their energy.ย Another third will go along for the ride.ย They wonโ€™t be out front leading, but they wonโ€™t hold you back.ย The last third will be your resistors.ย Find them and either convert them or manage them out if they wonโ€™t fit the future vision of your company.

Creating a culture of innovation will be challenging, but when done successfully can be transformative and impactful to the bottom line.
